I finished the Simon Webb Memorial with a win in style. After 131 moves (!) I was able to convert a positional advantage I got early in the middlegame after 17...Bd6? If instead 17...h6, Black could have prevented the classical manoeuvre Bd2-g5-h4-g3 which gave White the control over the vital square e5.

My one but last game in the Simon Webb Memorial ended with another disappointing draw. With Black I had an advantage from early after the opening until the very end of the game. But once more it wasn't enough to win a game.

Two more draws in the Simon Webb Memorial. Neither my highly promising attacking position from the opening against Roman Chytilek, nor the small endgame advantage against Arno Nickel resulted in anything substantional.

My first win in the Simon Webb Memorial. I won with White against Peter Coleman in a Sicilian Taimanov. White had a serious spatial advantage out of the opening and a dangerous attack in a middlegame with opposite-colored bishops. The point of the combination after the mistake 30...Bd3 (30...Rg8 is better) is: 31.f5 gxf5 32.g5 and if now 32...h5 then 33.Rh4 Kg6 34.Rxh5! Kxh5 35.g6. After that I got a decisive advantage.

Draw #7 in the Simon Webb Memorial. A strange game with Raymond Boger ended with yet another draw. I had a good feeling with White out of the opening because of the pawn structure and later because of White's central control. But after 21.c3 the position will be opened, which helps Black's pair of bishops to at least level the position.

With a draw against John Pugh from England I have finished my last game in the WC26CT03. Some black inaccuracies in the opening (7...Nb4 and 9...Kd8) gave White an advantage, but the extra pawn in the ending arising after 28.Kxh1 is unconvertable. Nevertheless I think that both sides didn't play this endgame well.

Draw #6 in the Simon Webb Memorial. But at least this time I was on the defensive side, handling the black pieses versus Frank Gerhardt. In one of the main lines of the Marshall I tried a new concept with 20...Nb6 to neutralize White's small advantage.

I have finished two more games, both ending in a draw.
The first was a white draw with Jason Bokar. I was able to convert an advantage in development into an extra pawn, but my splitted kingside pawn structure was too comitting to have real winning chances. The second draw was with Black against Swedish Sebastian Nilsson. Another unfortunate experiment of mine with the Najdorf. I couldn't equalize with a dynamical exchange sacrifice and had to start a reckless kingside attack with all my resources.

  • 29 10 2007 6/8 in the Candidates
I won with White against Romanian Zsolt Karacsony out of an English Opening. I tried to isolate an outsided black knight on a5 and take advantage on the kingside. That gave me in the end an extra exchange, which was an easy conversion after the Queens' swap.

In WC26CT03 I won with black against Henrik Pedersen from Denmark. Because of my traditional black problems in the 3.Bb5 line of the Sicilian I choose a rock solid approach without any winning ambitions in the opening. As it seems White was lulled into some careless play until he was overrolled on the kingside. Replay the games at the WC26CT03 games site.

This week I finished two more games in WC26CT03. First I played a draw with Black against Igor Dolgov. 9...Qa5 is simply bad and gave me a lot of trouble. I was lucky to have the break 17...e6-e5 with just a slightly inferior position. In my white win against Leon Krajnc I tried a hyperaggressive attack against the Nimzo-Indian Hedgehog and succeeded to get a decisive advantage in the late middlegame.

I played another draw in WC26CT03. This time I was Black against Alain del Vecchio from France. I tried another variation of the Scheveningen against the English Attack of the Najdorf, but I was in big trouble. White should have played 22.Qc3 (instead of 22.Qb4) Qa7 23.a3 b4 24.Qe3 bxa3 25.b3 with a big advantage. I think the move 34.Rxg7 is completely senseless and 100% engine dump. • 18 07 2007 11/12 in RCF 80
I have finished my last game in "Romanian Chess Federation - 80 years" with a win against Hans-Joachim Hofstetter. In this long and interesting game I was able to take some advantage after 27...e5 by creating a dangerous kingside pawn majority. Instead of the hasty 38.g5, which lost almost all of the advantage, I should have played 38.b4. In the double rook ending Black missed some chances for active counterplay like 50...Kc4 with the idea Kc4-d3-c2-b2. After that White's passed g-pawn converted into an extra rook, without allowing Black to exchange his rook for a draw. Click at RCF 80 games site for replay.

In WC26CT03 I played a black draw with Laurent Jacot from Switzerland. A theoretical discussion of the fashion line in the English Attack of the Najdorf ended after just 19 moves. • 28 01 2007 First win on time in WC26CT03
In my section of the Candidates for the World Championships I have won my first game, because my opponent Fedir Savchur didn't move in more than 40 days and thus was forfeited by the TD. • 29 12 2006 10/11
Today I won against Gheorghe Dobrei on time. Of course I do not deserve to win this game, as in the final position White has some ways to get an easy draw. • 01 12 2006 8,5/9
In RCF 80 I won with Black against Thomas Winckelmann, finally. The classical Scotch Gambit gave White 5 isolated pawns in "compensation" for his minus pawn. After 15 moves it was just technique. At this updated game site you can replay the game.
  • 25 10 2006 Winning strike ended
After 7 consecutive wins I have played my first draw in RCF 80 (Romanian Chess Federation - 80 years) with White against Jason Bokar. After a complex setup stage it looked as if White would get an advantage with an exchange sacrifice. But with 39...Rxb2 Black was able to neutralize White's initiative. See at the updated game site for the score.
  • 15 10 2006 7/7
I won with Black against Italian GM Massimo de Blasio.
The site to replay my games in RCF 80 is here. An old companion opening line from the Fischer - Spasski match gave White an advantage, but after exchanging more and more pieces the white pawn d6 turned into a weakness. In the rook ending Black is winning, because of the two connected passed pawns and a zugzwang in the final position. Not a good game with a lot of chances to do better for both sides.
  • 27 08 2006 6/6
In RCF 80 I won game #6, this time with White against Radu Breahnã.
See again at the game site for the score. Black run into problems playing a Hedgehog-setup with some tempi down. After a forcing continuation starting with 17.Bxb6 White had a good advantage in the ending.

  • 02 06 2006 I am on 4/4 in RCF 80 (Romanian Chess Federation - 80 years) after my win with Black against Patrick Spitz.

Dan Fleetwood has resigned in our game, so the last game in the WC18 Final is completed. See the final crosstable and the updated game site to replay my black win in a Berlin Wall, if you like. I consider the rook ending as my best achievement in this Championship, although I think with 61.Rd4+ White could have avoided defeat in the end.
At the moment I am waiting for an official confirmation, before I can call myself Bronze medal winner.

  • 09 04 2005 My game with Patrick Spitz ended with a draw after 51 moves. I have included the finish of the game on the game site.
I have also updated the crosstable at WC18 Final with the new result.
I think the intention of both players to play a real chess game is visible. All in all White's initiative at the kingside and the black chances on the queenside counter balanced each other. Instead of the dubious 38. .. a5?!, allowing the later 41.Rb5!, I should have played 38. .. b6. But even that wouldn't have left me with real winning chances.

I have done an update of the crosstable from WC18 Final with 4 new results. Now there is a total of 95 from 105 results.
  • 20 02 2005 Milan Mráz resigned in our game after 44 moves. I have included the last moves of this game on the game site.

Joop van Oosterom is the winner of our tournament and thus the 18th World Champion of Correspondence Chess!
My heartly congratulations for his achievement!
Some of the top level games were finished recently, the most important was a draw between Hans-Marcus Elwert and Joop van Oosterom. The final score of Mr. van Oosterom with 11 / 14 is simply superb.
I have updated the crosstable WC18 Final with 6 new results. Now there is a total of 91 from 105 results. The crosstable is in a new form. It is ordered by the percentage now. So the new World Champion is, where he belongs ;-). At the top of the table.
  • 01 02 2005 A new update of the crosstable from WC18 Final with 5 new results. Now there is a total of 85 from 105 results.
  • 01 02 2005 This week Vladimir Hefka and I agreed to a draw after 53 moves. I have included this game on the game site.
As you can see it was another Botvinnik Main Line and the first 26 moves were identical to my game with Olita Rause. I consider Vladimir Hefka's transition to the ending with 27.Ne7 as not dangerous for Black. The blockade in c4 is just temporary and if someone is better in that position it is Black. That was even played before in at least two games.
I think 32.Re2 is a mistake that caused some headache for White. But the winning potential was already too small, so I had no real chance for a full point. Instead either 32.Re7 or 32.b3 Nb6 33.Nd6 would have been better.
  • 21 01 2005 Update of my live games from WC18 Final.
